description
Vegetative characteristics
Gasteria rawlinsonii grows trunk-forming and sprouts from the base. The hanging shoots reach a length of up to 100 centimeters. The linear, ribbon-shaped, slightly sickle-shaped leaves are arranged in two rows on the shoot or form a rosette . Their tips are bent back. The green leaf blade is 3 to 8 inches long and 1 to 2.5 inches wide. It is not spotted or faintly covered with white spots. The underside is convex but not keeled. The epidermis is rough. The leaf margin is sparsely toothed or sometimes not reinforced. The teeth turn black with age. The tip of the leaf is bluntly rounded and has an attached tip.
Inflorescences and flowers
The inflorescence is a panicle and reaches a length of 10 to 50 centimeters. The reddish pink flower envelope is 16 to 25 millimeters long. Their bulbous part is spherical-ellipsoidal or spherical. It extends over more than half the length of the perianth. At the top it is constricted into a pink or white, sometimes green-striped tube with a diameter of 4 to 6 millimeters.
Fruits and seeds
The elongated egg-shaped fruits are 18 millimeters long. They contain seeds 3 to 4 millimeters long .
Systematics and distribution
Gasteria rawlinsonii is distributed in the South African province of Eastern Cape on shady, almost vertical rock faces made of quartzitic sandstone.
The first description by Anna Amelia Obermeyer was published in 1976.
