Gasteria disticha is a species of the genus Gasteria in the subfamily of the Affodil family (Asphodeloideae).

Vegetative characteristics

Gasteria disticha grows without a trunk, is prostrate to upright and reaches a height of 2.5 to 23 centimeters. It sprouts from the base and forms small groups with a diameter of 7.5 to 23 centimeters. The ribbon-shaped, upright leaves are arranged in two rows on the shoot. The leaf blade is 6 to 17 inches long and 3 to 4.5 inches wide. The leaf blade is densely covered with white spots arranged in irregular diagonal stripes. The epidermis is rough. The leaf margin is irregularly wavy. The tip of the leaf is bluntly rounded, rarely trimmed and has an attached tip. Young leaves are often spreading or bent back, rough and clipped.

Inflorescences and flowers

The panicle inflorescence is simple or has a pair of side branches. It reaches a length of 20 to 90 centimeters. The pink to reddish pink bloom is 12 to 20 millimeters long. Your bulbous part is spherical-ellipsoidal or narrow ellipsoidal. It extends over half the length of the flower envelope and has a diameter of 6 millimeters. At the top it is constricted into a white, green-striped tube with a diameter of 3 to 4 millimeters.

Fruits and seeds

The elongated fruits are 14 to 23 millimeters long and 7 millimeters wide. They contain seeds 3 to 4 millimeters long and 2 to 3 millimeters wide .

Systematics and distribution

Gasteria disticha is common in the South African province of Western Cape .

The first description as Aloe disticha by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum was published in 1753. Adrian Hardy Haworth placed the species in the genus Gasteria in 1827 .

A distinction is made between the following varieties :

  • Gasteria disticha var. Disticha
  • Gasteria disticha var. Langebergensis van Jaarsv.
  • Gasteria disticha var. Robusta van Jaarsv.
