history

Johann Heinrich Fischer collects the first volunteers for the Freiämtersturm in front of his inn

The inn dates back to at least the beginning of the 17th century. The city of Lucerne , whose subject area was Merenschwand at that time, confirmed the tavern rights in 1615 and protected the monopoly of the Schwanenwirt in 1647. Until 1798, when the old order collapsed, the inn also served as the administrative and court house of the Lucerne office of Merenschwand.

The most famous innkeeper was the politician Johann Heinrich Fischer , leader of the Freiämtersturm in December 1830. He moved from Merenschwand via Wohlen to Aarau , where, with the help of 6,000 armed volunteers, he overthrew the Aargau cantonal government in a bloodless putsch. As a result, he forced the drafting of a new constitution.

In 1808 and 1957 the building was renovated. From 1955 to 1961 the hall of the inn served as a classroom for a primary school class , as a temporary solution until the opening of the new school building.

building

Western narrow side

The stately building in frame construction consists of two unequal parts, which are grouped under a half-hip roof with two distinctive ducars . Similarities are the coffin cornices , the size and profile of the windows, the shape of the hatches and the embossed corner cuboids. The portholes rest on carved arches and consoles . The axis widths, the design of the upper floor and the narrow side are different.

The more simply designed eastern part of the building was built at the beginning of the 17th century. The narrower western part, decorated with scrollwork and kymation , was added in 1681. Two adhesive roofs subdivide the free-standing western narrow side, while the eastern narrow side is almost completely covered by the neighboring building. In addition, the window parapets on the upper floor of the western part protrude like a bay window and the window openings are flanked by Tuscan pilasters . The forged tavern sign as well as the stucco ceiling and the curved sumptuous buffet in the hall of the western part date from 1808 .
