The former Gasthof zum Goldenen Adler is a listed residential building in Rheinfelden in the canton of Aargau . It is located on Obertorplatz in the southeast corner of the old town, in the immediate vicinity of the Obertorturm . The baroque building is classified as a cultural asset of national importance .

history

The eastern part of the building dates back to the first half of the 14th century. According to a deed of purchase, there had been a tavern there since at least 1580 . In 1726 the landlord Johann Caspar Schweickhardt acquired the two properties adjoining to the west. The three houses were then combined with a common south facade and a mansard roof . His son Franz Joseph had the building converted into a representative residential building in 1765, which also served as a customs office until 1832. Then the Schweickhardt family ran a specialty and hardware store there.

A new owner set up a salt water hotel in the building in 1896 . For this purpose, he had the attic expanded and an adjoining barn equipped with guest rooms. In 1946 there was a massive renovation of the ground floor, and from 1961 to 1963 the facade was renovated. The total restoration between 1994 and 1996 was combined with the conversion into an apartment building. The original spatial conditions were restored by removing partition walls that were subsequently installed.

Building

The former inn is in a prominent location on the northern edge of Obertorplatz, between Geissgasse and Brodlaube. Its three-storey front building with four axes is summarized by a mansard roof, the facade is structured by corner pilasters with blood-red coloring. The varying distances between the axes give an idea of the medieval predecessor buildings. The front is decorated with pilasters adorned with lush capitals ; about a crossbar with finer Rocaille - cartridge tensioned. The double-leaf door has curved panels and filigree skylight grilles . The east facade on Geissgasse is characterized by a slightly bent, three-storey wing with a gable roof , with grooved window frames on the first floor. In the west there is a three-storey, two-axle annex with a gently sloping half -hip roof .

In the annex to the Brodlaube there is a hall on the first floor. It dates from the late Rococo period and was decorated around 1765. Sweeping rocailles combine with the stucco ceiling to form an elongated quatrefoil . Rocaille cartouches enclose landscape paintings in the corners. Wall stucco in the Louis-Seize -style made of flower pendants with crossed branches and bundles of ears of corn emblazoned between the windows and above the fireplace made of stucco marble . The artistic decoration of the hall is attributed to the plasterer Johann Martin Fröwis from Vorarlberg .
