Host was director of the garden until 1834. He enriched him with many trips to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy (including the then botanically little-known regions of Istria and Dalmatia) and in 1797 published a manual on its plants (Synopsis plantarum in Austria provinciisque adjacentibus sponte crescentium). From 1801 a richly illustrated work on grass species (Icones et descriptiones graminum austriacorum) followed in the Empire, from 1827 to 1831 a Flora austriaca and in 1825 a book on willows (Salix). Host also taught botany at the Theresian Knight Academy and taught the emperor, who was interested in botany, and his brothers the archdukes.
