Gates Harbor , also known as Gates Boat Harbor , is a small natural harbor in the Southland regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The Gates Harbor is located approximately 79 km west-southwest of Tuatapere on the south coast of the South Island. The natural harbor has a length of around 840 m and a width of around 460 m. The only 180 m wide entrance to the water is lined on both sides by rocks jutting out of the water, on which the waves break. The coastline extends for around 2 km.
history
From 1821 to 1922, the natural harbor presumably served seal hunters, who were dropped off by the US ship General Gates on the south coast of New Zealand's South Island, as a haven and starting point for seal hunts. The circumstances under which some of the crew were killed by Māori could never be fully clarified.
