Gauri Gill

Gauri Gill (* 1970 in Chandigarh ) is an Indian photographer who lives in New Delhi .

life and work

Gauri Gill initially studied up to a Bachelor's degree (1992) at the College of Art in New Delhi. She then obtained a Bachelor of Photography at Parsons The New School for Design , New York in 1994 and a Masters in Photography from Stanford University in California in 2002 . She taught at the American School in New Delhi.

Gill initially worked as a photojournalist before becoming a freelance photographer. She is a black and white photographer and works primarily with gelatin silver prints .

She takes photos in the barren landscape of Rajasthan in the western Indian border area. She focuses on the life and experiences of rural and migrant communities. Her photos tell of private celebrations as well as of loss, family conflicts, seasonal hardship, nomadism and rural education. Well-known photo series are “Notes from the Desert” (1999–) and the series “Fields of Sight” (2013–2016) developed by Gauri Gill together with the Warli artist Rajesh Vangad.

Gill exhibited in India, but also internationally. Mention should be made of exhibitions at MoMA PS1 , New York; at Documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel; the Kochi-Muziris Biennale ; the 7th Moscow Biennale ; at the Freer Gallery of Art , Washington; the Wiener Library , London; Art Gallery of Ontario , Toronto and the Whitechapel Art Gallery , London.
