Gautam Shantilal Adani (born June 24, 1962 in Ahmedabad , Gujarat ) is an Indian businessman, founder and chairman of the Adani Group . The Adani Group is the largest port operator in India. The Ahmedabad-based infrastructure company is also India's largest coal producer and coal trader. In mid-2019, his net worth is estimated at $ 11.7 billion, making him one of the richest people in India.

In addition to his wealth, Adani is also considered to be politically networked and one of the most influential people in the country.

Life

Gautam Adani was born in 1962. His parents were Jainas , had a total of 8 children and originally came from a village in the northern part of Gujarat. After dropping out of Gujarat University in economics as a teenager , he moved to Mumbai and worked in the diamond trade before returning to his home state.

In 1985 he started importing primary polymers for small industry. In 1988, Adani founded Adani Exports Limited, now known as Adani Enterprises Limited - the holding company of the Adani Group. Originally the company traded in agricultural and energy products.

In 1991, the policy of economic liberalization proved beneficial for his company and he began to expand business to trade in raw materials and textiles. In 1995 the Adani Group started operating the port of Mundra .

In the meantime, the Adani Group has become a multinational company, one of the largest in the country. The group now operates mines in India, Indonesia and Australia and supplies coal to Bangladesh , China and Southeast Asia .

Personal

He is married to Priti Adani and has two children. Adani is the President of the Adani Foundation , which is mainly run by his wife. The foundation runs projects for charity in various Indian states.

Adani survived the 2008 Mumbai attacks as a hostage at the Seafront Taj Hotel. He was kidnapped in 1997.
