Gay for Johnny Depp was an American hardcore punk band from New York City . It was assigned to the Mathcore or the Screamo .
Band history
Gay for Johnny Depp was founded in 2004 by former members of the bands Garrison and Instruction . The first EPs followed in 2004 and 2005. The British music press especially praised the band, so that they were allowed to perform at the Download Festival in Donington Park in 2006 . The 2007 album The Politics of Cruelty contained a fake, pornographic stalking letter addressed to actor Johnny Depp .
In 2009 a discography CD with all the songs published to date was released under the title Manthology: a Tireless Exercise in Narcissism Featuring Gay for Johnny Depp's Excellent Cadavers . In 2011, What Doesn't Kill You, Eventually Kills You , the band's second album, was released. The album contains the Slade - Cover Cum On Feel the Noize (as Cum On Feel the Boize , which was released as a single).
In late 2011, the band broke up and posted a video on YouTube in which they announced their decision.
Music genre
Gay for Johnny Depp played hardcore punk with metal influences. The band can be assigned to several musical genres, including Screamo and Mathcore . Their music was characterized by a high tempo with abrupt jumps in rhythm and tempo. The singing was guttural and mostly screeched. The band used some atypical elements, including noise music, classical piano music and electronic music.
The band's image was based on a homosexual orientation and obsession with actor Johnny Depp, who was also mentioned several times in the song lyrics. The lyrics were deliberately obscene and sexual . During live performances, the band members disguised themselves and used, among other things, women's clothes, painted fingernails, gas masks, rocker clothing or appeared naked.
