Gazpacho is a art rock - band from Oslo , Norway .

The band was founded by Jan-Henrik Ohme (vocals), Jon-Arne Vilbo (guitar) and Thomas Andersen (keyboards, producer), who started making music together in 1996. The productions of the first years were completed by guest musicians before Mikael Krømer (violin, co-producer), Robert R. Johanson (drums) and Kristian Torp (bass) became permanent members of Gazpacho. The band was named after a title on the 1995 album Afraid Of Sunlight by their role model Marillion .

Gazpacho's music is considered neo-prog . The audible influences inspired one critic to describe Gazpacho's music as "classical post ambient nocturnal atmospheric neo-progressive folk world rock". The band itself expresses the diverse influences through its name Gazpacho and names Marillion , Porcupine Tree , Jeff Buckley , Kate Bush , Muse , Pink Floyd , Radiohead , Sigur Rós , Mew , Kraftwerk , Tori Amos , Mr. Bungle , Faith No More , Talk Talk , A-ha and Roger Waters .

history

The first years (1996-2001)

Jon-Arne Vilbo and Thomas Andersen had played together in a band called Delerium before they met Jan-Henrik Ohme and thus the foundation stone for Gazpacho was laid. For two years they worked on a concept album entitled Random Access Memory, which they then rejected together because it did not seem mature enough to them.

Roy Funner played the bass at this time, the drums were a drum computer.

Make-a-star and Bravo (2002-2003)

All three members of Gazpacho were part of the Scandinavian branch of Marillions The Web fanclub. This invited Jan-Henrik Ohme to sing the Marillion piece Afraid of Sunlight at the Swap The Band Show during the first Marillion Convention Weekend . At this convention, the band distributed a 4-track promo EP "Get it while it's cold" which found its way into some internet magazines and received a more than positive response.

In May 2002 the band entered a competition on Make-A-Star with the song Sea Of Tranquility and won. A second submitted song, Ghost, took second place. The band then released a full album on MP3.com. Get It While It's Cold (37 ° C) included three pieces from the promo EP and three new tracks. With one of these new pieces (Nemo) the band won the Make-A-Star competition a second time.

In 2003, Gazpacho released their first full album Bravo, which included five of the six tracks from the MP3.com album and six new compositions. As a result of the Make-A-Star competition, there were collaborations with Ester Valentine and the New Zealand producer Peter Kearns. Valentine sang the duet Novgorod (which she co-composed) with Ohme and Kearns produced two of the pieces on Bravo. This album brought further international recognition, the leading Dutch music magazine Oor wrote "this debut album is an extraordinary beauty"

The band was invited to play on the second Marillion Convention Weekend. In addition, Gazpacho was expanded to include drummer Geir Digernes (who had already played a few pieces on Bravo) and Mikael Krømer (violin) and Kristian Skedsmo (flute) for the title track.

Supporting Marillion (2004-2005)

The appearance at the Convention Weekend gave Gazpacho the opportunity to accompany Marillion on her Marbles tour through eleven European countries. In addition, Robert Johanson, the new drummer and Mikael Krømer and Kristian Skedsmo became an integral part of the live band.

Before the tour began, Gazpacho released her second album When Earth Lets Go ; so the band had enough material for their live repertoire. For the When Earth Lets Go album, there was a collaboration with producer Steve Lyon (Paul McCartney, Depeche Mode, The Cure), who produced the track Substitute for Murder , to see if a label would be interested in the work of the band. Despite the involvement of Steve Lyons and increased popularity through the tour with Marillion, Gazpacho was unable to secure a record deal.

Through the friendship with Marillion Gazpacho was able to release her next album on her own label Racket Records. Racket brought out the band's third album and re-released Bravo and When Earth Lets Go . Marillion support also brought a collaboration with Marillion guitarist Steve Rothery, who plays a solo in Do You Know What You Are Saying . Sound samples sent in by fans were processed in the album, such as those of a comb and a Leopard II tank.

Roy Funner left the band after the tour in 2004 to have more time for his family and was replaced by Kristian Torp. With this new line-up, Gazpacho accompanied Marillion's Not Quite Christmas tour on four other dates.

Night and .. (2006–2008)

It was quiet for Gazpacho for a year until they released the album Night in February 2007. In addition, the band was invited to the Marillion's Convention Weekend again. Gazpacho played their first international headlining gig at Boerderij in Zoetermeer in the Netherlands on February 1st, 2007.

Night is a 50-minute concept album, divided into five pieces. The band describes the concept as the musical description of a dream or stream of consciousness exploring the question of where dreams end and reality begins and the psyche is the tool that has to decide what to believe. The person goes through several real and imaginary memories and sees the world from different people's angles. She travels through time, visiting places around the globe like old New Orleans and old forests where pagan rituals are observed. Night tells about life and the possibilities to interpret our existence.

Mikael Krømer, who had played the violin on all previous albums and live shows, became a full member of the band and co-producer with the Night Album. Kristian "The Duke" Skedsmo was also there again and played six different instruments for the night album.

The successor "Tick Tock" was released on March 27, 2009 by HWT / Sony Music. Thomas Andersen was particularly inspired by the eighth chapter of the novel Wind, Sand and Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry . In it, Exupéry describes autobiographically how he and his co-pilot Prévot wander through a desert after a plane crash. The question about the last drop of water becomes a question of humanity: Should the last bullet in the pistol kill one of them or force the other to give up the water? With "Tick Tock" the band set Exupéry's journey to music and the appeal to hold on to humanity even in extreme situations. The concept album was presented on an extensive European tour in March and April. In July 2009 the band's two-hour appearance at the IV Night of The Prog Festival on the Loreley was recorded and released in March 2010 as a double CD + DVD.

Missa Atropos

In December 2010 Gazpacho signed with the British post-progressive label kscope, which also includes Anathema , The Pineapple Thief and Steven Wilson . The seventh studio album Missa Atropos was released in January 2011, followed by a European tour.

Demon

The studio album Demon is inspired by a conversation Thomas Andersen (keyboardist and producer of Gazpacho) had with his father a few years ago. He told of a mysterious darkness that he had to deal with during a business trip to Prague in the 1970s. A Klezmer part at the end of "Wizard of Altai Mountains" is z. B. a reference to the atmosphere in the Jewish part of Prague during the Second World War - inspired by the story of Petr Ginz.
