Building 041

The building 041 in Bitterfeld-Wolfen was from 1936 to 1938 as administrative and research center for the film factory Agfa Wolfen built. Since the beginning of 2010 it has been the town hall of the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen.

history

The director of research at the film factory, John Eggert , designed a central scientific laboratory. In addition, the management of the film factory was to be housed in the new building complex.

Building 041 was built according to plans by the architect Adolf Herberger, the architecture is stylistically between the New Building of the 1920s and the neoclassicism of the 1930s. Its design is reminiscent of the IG-Farben building in Frankfurt am Main because of its large rounded shape . It consists of two wing buildings with a connector and a round building in front as well as two atriums inside. The facade is clad with sandstone .

A lecture hall with the most modern projection technology and a scientific library with tens of thousands of volumes on film production and photography were integrated into the building. The administration wing had a representative design with spacious entrance areas, stairwells with stucco marble, wood-paneled executive's room (with balcony) and a conference room with a chandelier. A paternoster served as an elevator. The rooms were heated by underfloor and wall heating. From the basement floor one got directly into an air raid shelter below the green area in front of it.

After the end of the Second World War and the break-up of IG Farben , the film factory was transferred to a Soviet stock corporation (SAG). Building 041 remained the seat of research and the respective directorate or the general directorate of the later photochemical combine. Until 1990, there was a seven-meter-high red star on the roof, which shone when the plan was met .

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , the building had various uses. From around the mid-1990s, building 041 was empty and fell into disrepair as a result of break-ins and vandalism .

Building 041 during the conversion to the town hall (July 2009)

From 2008, the building was 041 by the new owner, the Housing and Construction Company Wolfen (WBG) , rehabilitated . At the turn of the year 2009/2010, large parts of the administration of the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen were able to move into the rotunda. The lecture hall was reopened in summer 2010. In recognition of his pioneering photochemical research achievements, John Eggert gave the renovated lecture hall its name.

The statue of the chemical worker on the green area in front of the building recalls the history of the film factory.
