John Eggert

John Emil Max Eggert (born August 1, 1891 in Berlin ; † September 29, 1973 in Basel ) was a German physical chemist . He was best known for his textbook on physical chemistry , first published in 1926 , which was reprinted eight times by 1968.

Live and act

After studying at the Technical University of Charlottenburg , Eggert was an assistant at the Physico-Chemical Institute there from 1909 to 1913.
In 1914 he received his doctorate with the thesis on the absorption rates of hydrogen and oxygen by metal salt solutions. In 1921 he became a private lecturer and in 1923 professor for physical chemistry at the University of Berlin .

John Eggert did pioneering research in the areas of reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, photochemistry and photophysics. In 1919 he provided preliminary work for the Saha equation.

In 1921 he became an employee of Agfa in Berlin. In 1928 the photo research department, which had moved from Berlin to Wolfen, was expanded. From 1928 to 1945 he headed the “Scientific Department” of the Wolfen film factory with the status of research director . Eggert is considered the father of scientific photography. Under his direction, the Agfa color grid plates and films were developed for photography and for use as cine film . With the Agfa-Bipack and Agfa-Pantachrom processes introduced at this time, cultural and advertising films were made, such as the first German color cinema film “Bunte Tierwelt” in 1930/31. On October 17, 1936, Eggert presented the first multi-layer color film, Agfacolor Neu, in Berlin the presentation of color slides and a cine film. The process had been worked out in the technical and scientific department, which was originally only responsible for safeguarding ongoing production, based on an idea by Wilhelm Schneider under the direction of Gustav Wilmanns . The process, which was also used for the production of cinema films from 1939/40 and for the production of paper images in 1942, gradually replaced the old color photographic materials mentioned.

In the 1930s he edited the six conference volumes, Results of Technical Radiology , together with Ernst Schiebold .

In 1946 Prof. Eggert briefly taught at the TH Munich . From 1947 to 1961 he was full professor of photography at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich . He was a corresponding member of the Saxon , Bavarian and Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

Since 1971 the Photographische Gesellschaft Wien has awarded the John Eggert Prize for Image Science. In recognition of his services, John Eggert gave his name to the lecture hall, which was renovated in 2010, in the former administration and laboratory building of the Wolfen film factory , which is now the town hall of the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen .
