Gebhard Koenig

Gebhard König (born November 30, 1950 in Ahrenberg ) is an Austrian librarian and author. From 1996 to 2011 he was director of the Lower Austrian regional library ; from 1998 to 2002 also Vice President of the Association of Austrian Librarians .

Life

Gebhard König is the youngest of six children of Elisabeth, née Gunz, and Josef König, who was director of the Lower Austrian regional library from 1948 to 1968 . He attended elementary school in Mödling and graduated in 1969 in the humanistic branch of the Bundesgymnasium Franz-Keim-Gasse . König studied history, geography and ancient history at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1976. He wrote his dissertation on the historian and librarian Peter Lambeck . In the same year, König entered the Lower Austrian regional service and was assigned to the Lower Austrian regional library. He completed his librarianship training at the Austrian National Library and in 1980 he passed the state examination for higher library service. In 1996 he was appointed library director and one year later appointed real councilor ; As a result, he also took over the management of the culture, science and teaching group of the Lower Austrian state government and was promoted to lecturing councilor . He retired in April 2011. König has been married since 1976 and has two children.

Gebhard König is a member of the ÖkaV Theresiana in the Austrian Cartel Association .

Act

After joining the Lower Austrian State Library, König was entrusted with the reorganization of the library's map collection and created a contemporary card catalog that was aligned with that of the Austrian National Library's map collection. In 1982 he was commissioned to create an automated library management system . To this end, he and the IT department of the Province of Lower Austria developed a library management system that covered the areas of acquisitions through to cataloging on a PC ; the catalog research itself was carried out on the mainframe computer of the Province of Lower Austria. In July 1989, König was appointed deputy director of the library. When they moved in 1996/1997, König was responsible for the transfer and reorganization of the holdings as the relocation officer. In June 1996 he was appointed head of the Lower Austrian State Library and library director. In the following years König organized and curated exhibitions in the library, for which he published numerous exhibition catalogs. König initiated the digitization of the view and map holdings as well as a six-volume book series "Lower Austria in old views", which presented the state, broken down according to geographic units, in vedute and artist originals from the holdings of the topographic collection of the Lower Austria regional library. Today the “Collection of Topographical Views” is fully digitized and can be accessed on the Internet.

König was also involved in the personnel representation of the Lower Austria regional service. From 1986 to 1990 he was a mandate at the Lower Austria Landhaus personnel representation and from 1986 to 1990 he was in charge of the central personnel representation of state employees and the central works council of the Lower Austrian state hospitals as a press officer. In addition, he was a member of state examination commissions in the museum, archive and library service, assessor in the state assessment commissions and member of the state disciplinary committee for academics. From 1998 to 2002 he was Vice President of the Association of Austrian Librarians.
