history

When Mödling grew rapidly towards the end of the 19th century, there was soon a need for appropriate educational opportunities for young people. In 1895, former mayor Josef Schöffel, as chief curator of Mödlinger Sparkasse, obtained the approval of the funds required for the construction of a middle school, so that by 1897 the school started operating as a lower secondary school with 73 students (56 in the first, 17 in the second grade) in the von Eugen Sehnal planned building could be included. Two years later, with the construction of a large central wing, it was expanded into a state secondary and upper secondary school, where the first Matura exams could be held in 1904. Finally, the institution was converted to an eight-class secondary school in 1909/1910 .

During the First World War , the school lost a large part of its teaching staff. In the economically difficult times that followed, the administration of the school was transferred to the federal government in 1921, after it had been received by the state of Lower Austria since 1902 . Around 1930 the institution was considered the most important and largest middle school in Lower Austria.

A planned educational reform was canceled when Austria was annexed in 1938 and the school was renamed "State High School for Boys in Vienna-Mödling". As a result of conscription to the military during the Second World War , the number of hours in many subjects was reduced, and individual subjects were canceled entirely.

During the occupation the intact school building was confiscated and the now "Bundesrealgymnasium Wien XXIV - Mödling " was relocated several times. From 1954 the school was initially called "Bundesrealgymnasium Mödling". It was not until 1957/1958 that a new humanistic branch was introduced, and the school has since been called "Bundesgymnasium und Bundesrealgymnasium Mödling".

After 1955 the school was enlarged several times. The increase and expansion of the parent house between 1968 and 1971 should be emphasized. Since 1972 the former boys' school has also been open to girls.

In 1976/1977 the branch " Roseggergasse " was opened in Perchtoldsdorf , which soon developed into its own school. A further increase in the number of pupils made it necessary to use the former girls' high school in Eisentorgasse on a provisional basis between 1978 and 1990. In addition to decreasing birth rates, relaxation brought about the opening of a further, meanwhile also independent branch, the "Oberstufenrealgymnasium for competitive athletes" in Maria Enzersdorf in the 1985/1986 school year, the offer of which was expanded from 1990/1991 to include a "Realgymnasium with a sports focus".

Since 1988/1989 the school experiment "Gymnasium with a focus on computer science" has been carried out in order to give the students access to new technologies. With the introduction of notebook classes as early as 2000, this focus was further focused. Since the 2008/2009 school year, particularly gifted children have had the opportunity to complete the lower level in just three (instead of the normal four) years, and in the upper level from the 10th grade onwards, so-called plus courses are available, which make up a large part of the timetable of these model classes.

architecture

The late historical three-story horseshoe-shaped building complex was opened in 1897. In 1967 the school was expanded to include an L-shaped extension. Another extension has been under construction since July 2019. The plans envisage 18 new classrooms, a triple gymnasium with a sports field on the roof, separate rooms for afternoon care and a multi-purpose hall. The existing building will be completely renovated and an additional roof structure. The work should be completed in 2022.
