The term is used especially in the Federal Republic of Germany in sport shooting in order to be able to distinguish the utility pistols from special sport pistols. According to the sports regulations of the German Shooting Federation (DSB), such pistols or revolvers must :

have to be considered a utility pistol or utility revolver. For shooting in the discipline of utility pistols and utility revolvers, shooting and competition rules are laid down, and the performance badge and the master marksman's badge of the DSB (365 rings with 40 shots) can be acquired with the utility pistol.

In some shooting sports associations, the utility pistols may not be modified compared to the original condition, for example at the Kyffhäuserbund in the discipline utility pistols, only weapons without technical changes are allowed that were or are carried in competition condition in a "regular police or army unit".

Common utility pistols include the Austrian Glock 17 , the Czech ČZ 75 and the German Walther P99 .
