Hans Joachim Schneider

Hans Joachim Schneider (born November 14, 1928 in Biedenkopf , Hesse ; † June 18, 2015 ) was a German legal scholar, criminologist and psychologist. He taught as a professor of criminology at the University of Münster .

Life

Hans Joachim Schneider studied law in Marburg, Frankfurt / Main and Cologne. In 1957 he received his doctorate in Cologne. In the following years he studied psychology , education and sociology in Freiburg and Basel. He completed his studies in 1967 with a diploma in psychology. In 1971 he completed his habilitation at the University of Hamburg in the subjects of criminology, juvenile criminal law and the penal system. In the same year he was appointed to the University of Münster, where he was appointed professor of criminology, forensic psychology and criminal law. Schneider married Hildegard Schneider (nee Schneider). With her he had a daughter and a son. His daughter Ursula Schneider was appointed judge at the Federal Court of Justice on May 19, 2008. Schneider stayed in Münster until his retirement in 1994 . After his retirement, Schneider taught as a visiting professor at the University of Lodz in Poland .

Hans Joachim Schneider was:

  • Since 1971 director of the criminology department of the Institute for Criminal Sciences in Münster;
  • 1979 to 1985 first president of the World Society of Victimology (World Society of Victimology);
  • from 1980 to 1985 member of the board of directors of the International Society for Criminology in Paris;
  • from 1981 to 1987 criminology expert in the Special Expert Committee of the Council of Europe (“Position of the Victim in Criminal Law and Criminal Proceedings”);
  • in 1984 appraiser for "Women as Victims of Crime" for the United Nations;
  • since 1989 member of an independent government commission of the federal government to prevent and combat violence.

Honors

  • Awarded an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Law at the University of Lodz in Poland in 1987.
  • At the 12th International Congress for Criminology in Seoul / Korea in 1998, Prof. Schneider was the first German to receive the Hermann Mannheim Prize from the International Center for Comparative Criminology.
  • Schneider was an honorary member of foreign criminological societies.
