Poems is the book title of a collection of lyrical works by the Austrian expressionist and symbolist poet Georg Trakl . It was published in July 1913 by K. Wolff Verlag as part of the book series The Youngest Day (Volume 7/8).

The best-known works in this volume include Die Schöne Stadt , An den Knaben Elis , Der Gewitterabend , In Winter , De profundis , Vorstadt im Föhn , In the Afternoon Whispered and Decay .

Edition history

In response to the poems published by Trakl in the literary magazine Der Brenner , Kurt Wolff wrote to Trakl on April 1, 1913: “I have read your poems in the Brenner with great interest and would like to ask whether you would be inclined to send me a compilation of your poems that you consider suitable for publication. ” In the same month, Trakl sent the requested selection to K. Wolff Verlag. In July 1913 the collection, which had been rearranged and corrected while printing, was finally published by Wolff Verlag. To this end, Trakl signed a contract in which K. Wolff Verlag was granted all rights of first refusal to Trakl's publications for the next five years.

It is the only book edition of Trakl's poems published during his lifetime. Much of it previously appeared in Der Brenner magazine . Trakl revised the poems Dream of Evil and Human Misery after the collection was published.

Two texts previously published were from Georg Trakl 1909 compiled so-called collection in 1909 , but could not find a publisher accepted, and vice subtitled: Expiration (originally autumn ) and music in Miabell (originally Colored autumn ).

A second unauthorized edition of the poems followed the first edition in 1917, apart from minor changes and printing errors, and added a table of contents to the first edition from 1913.

In March 1914 Georg Trakl announced a second volume entitled Sebastian im Traum , which was also published posthumously by K. Wolff Verlag in 1915 under contract.

Interpretative approaches

This collection illustrates Georg Trakl's poetic technique. There are opposites such as positive utopian- sensual images and images of a repulsive reality . In addition to this there is an unmistakable dream character style which emerges in an educational way. This is clearly shown in the first three lines of the second version of the poem Psalm :

It's a light that the wind has extinguished.
It's a heather jug that a drunkard leaves in the afternoon.
It's a vineyard, burned and black with holes full of spiders.
