The Schrassig prison (in official parlance: Center pénitentiaire de Schrassig ) is the only closed prison in Luxembourg . It is located near the villages of Schrassig , Sandweiler and Oetringen in the area of the municipality of Schüttringen .

The prison opened in 1984 after six years of construction. It replaced the prison in the Luxembourg district of Grund . It was overcrowded after just three years. In the 1990s, the prison was extensively expanded, but remained overcrowded: In March 2007, the prison was designed for a capacity of 600 prisoners and occupied 680 prisoners, 37 of them women.

The occupancy fell from 2007 to 2008: On September 1, 2008, 596 people were imprisoned in Schrassig, 26 of them women. In 2012, the prison held an average of 588 people (558 men and 30 women).

Prison overcrowding is a recurring theme in the Luxembourg press.

In addition to the penal institution in Schrassig, Luxembourg has another penal institution in Givenich , in which men are in open prison . Another institution for up to 400 prisoners on remand is planned in Sassenheim .

The Schrassiger prison was a location in the film Back in Trouble (1997) with Moritz Bleibtreu .
