Givenich ( Luxembourgish Giwenech ) is a district of the municipality of Rosport-Mompach in the canton of Echternach in Luxembourg .
location
The place is about one kilometer west of the border with Rhineland-Palatinate and thus with Germany . Neighboring towns are Mompach in the west and Moersdorf in the east .
history
The name Givenich is derived from the Gallo-Roman Gaviniacus (= "the possession of Gavinius"). Between 1840 and 1946 graves were found that indicate a Merovingian or Carolingian settlement here . After there were thirteen courtyards next to a church in Givenich in the 12th century, the place died out as a result of plague and wars in the following century. It was not until the 16th century that a farm was rebuilt on the site, which passed into the possession of a family in 1830 and passed to the Luxembourg state in 1892. There has been a penal institution there since 1939 .
Givenich belonged to the municipality of Mompach until December 31, 2017 and since January 1, 2018 to the new municipality of Rosport-Mompach, which was created from the merger of the two municipalities of Rosport and Mompach.
