The battle near Kokersberg (today: Communauté de communes du Kochersberg ) took place on October 7, 1677 between a French army under François de Créquy and troops of the Holy Roman Empire (HRR) under the command of Charles V, Duke of Lorraine .

Starting position

The Duke of Lorraine had invaded Alsace with his army and threatened the Philippsburg fortress . The Maréchal de Créquy followed him with his troops without attacking him first.

The battle

De Créquy then managed to take an advantageous position on the heights near Kokersberg. However, this could not prevent the Lorraine cavalry, commanded by the Comte de Haran, from carrying out an attack that evening. However, Créquy ordered not to accept the battle.

Claude-Louis-Hector de Villars , who commanded the attacked right French wing, only used a detachment for defense. This was supported by two escadrons of the royal guard and repulsed 12 escadrons of the attacking cavalry. Parts of the Chevau-légers de la garde , Garde du corps and the gendarmes de la garde were deployed .

In the course of this battle, which was limited to weak cavalry fighting, the French captured several standards and captured a number of officers , including the Comte de Harlan.

Effects

Since Créquy had been ordered not to take any chances, the latter broke off camp on the following day, so that this limited success could not be extended and the Duke of Lorraine claimed victory for himself.
