In the sea battle at Stromboli during the Dutch War on January 8, 1676, the fleet of the United Provinces of the Netherlands met a fleet of the Kingdom of France in the Mediterranean off the north coast of Sicily .
The battle
The Dutch fleet under Michiel de Ruyter consisted of 19 ships of the line, including a Spanish one. She came across the French Mediterranean fleet under Abraham Duquesne with 20 ships of the line. The French attacked from windward, but could not break the closed line of the Dutch. The battle ended in a draw.
Both fleets met again in the naval battle near Augusta .
