At the Battle of Tobago during the Dutch War , naval and land forces of the Kingdom of France and the United Provinces of the Netherlands in the Caribbean met on the island of Tobago in February 1677 .
The battle
The Dutch admiral Jacob Binckes expected a French attack, organized the defense and reinforced the fortifications. A French fleet under Admiral Jean II. D'Estrées reached the island of Tobago in February 1677 and landed troops that were supposed to conquer an important fortress. On March 3, the French fleet attacked the port, many Dutch ships were destroyed, but the French also suffered heavy losses and had to break off the attack. The land troops were re-embarked and the French withdrew to Grenada .
In December of the same year d'Estrees returned with stronger forces and was able to defeat the Dutch on December 12th.
