Secret Files 3 (in the Anglo-American language area Secret Files 3 ) is a point-and-click adventure developed in Germany by Koch Media and Deep Silver . In terms of content, it follows on from the PC games Secret Files Tunguska (2006) and Secret Files 2: Puritas Cordis (2008).

action

The game begins with a prologue that depicts the fire in the Alexandria library in 48 BC. Has the center. This is triggered by a burglar controlled by the player. However, an amphora with important documents survived the incident.

In the actual game, like in the previous games, the player controls Nina Kalenkow. Shortly before their wedding, their partner Max Gruber is kidnapped. While trying to find out more about his disappearance, Nina gets on the trail of Max's most recent research and, in the course of this, comes across traces of ancient, perished civilizations as well as the aforementioned documents from Alexandria. Further research leads her to various locations around the world, such as San Francisco, Santorin or CERN, but also into her nightmares in which she comes into contact with dark figures, the so-called guardians. A puzzle is slowly coming together around technological development, the number pi and the continued existence of humanity.

The game has different endings depending on decisions made during the game. However, these only affect the end credits, not the further progression.

Game principle and technology

Secret file 3 is a so-called 2.5D point-and-click adventure . For polygons composite, three-dimensional figures to act in pre-rendered scenes. The player can use the mouse to move his character through the locations and use the mouse buttons to initiate actions that allow the character to interact with his environment. Nina can find objects, apply them to the environment or other objects and communicate with NPCs . As the story progresses, more locations will be unlocked. Occasionally the plot is interrupted by so-called mini - games , in which the player has to prove some skill and the level of difficulty can be selected. The playing time is about 15 hours.

Production notes

In October 2013 a spin-off with the title Secret Files Sam Peters appeared , which revolves around the journalist Sam Peters. Secret files Sam Peters was nominated for the children's software award TOMMI 2013.

From 14 aggregated ratings, Secret Files 3 achieved a score of 67 on Metacritic . The German-language magazine GameStar pointed out that Secret Files 3 pick up on real existing mysteries and provide “a fictional but highly exciting answer” for them. The magazine praised the background graphics, the German speakers and their dialogues, as well as puzzles that were well integrated into the plot, but criticized the "jittery and sometimes unintentionally funny" animations. PC Games also awarded 85% and judged: Great puzzles, stylish design . Gamers.de saw it similarly, describing the game as a successful, if a little too short, sequel and ultimately awarding 82%. Above all, the significantly shorter playing time compared to its predecessors, the abrupt end and the tasks that were sometimes perceived as too easy were criticized. On top of that, everything seems too smoothly ironed and constructed .
