Goat Church
The Geißkirche ( Hungarian Kecske-templom ; also Bencés templom - "Benedictine Church ") with the patronage of the Assumption of Mary is a Roman Catholic church in Sopron (German Ödenburg ) in Hungary . It got its popular name from the goat on the coat of arms of the patrician family Gaissel above the main portal.
history
The Geißkirche was built around 1280 by Franciscans as part of their monastery. The church was later given a Gothic vault , then a Baroque interior. In the 17th century were in the Geißkirche viceroys Hungary crowned, also there the found Reichstag instead. When Emperor Joseph II dissolved the Franciscan monastery in Sopron in 1787, the church passed to the Benedictines.
