Carcassonne and Trèbes stop

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In an Islamist attack and subsequent hostage-taking in the southern French cities of Carcassonne and Trèbes , a 26-year-old man killed four people and injured at least twelve others on March 23, 2018. One of those killed was a gendarmerie officer who had voluntarily placed himself under the control of the hostage taker so that a woman could be released. In the exchange of fire following the storming of the supermarket, the assassin was shot by a special unit of the French police .

background

The 26-year-old perpetrator, Radouane Lakdim, was born in Morocco and had been a French citizen since he was twelve . In 2011 he was convicted of possession of an illegal weapon and later of minor drug offenses. In 2016 he served a prison sentence in Carcassonne.

Lakdim had been registered in a police database for connections to the Salafist scene since 2014 and was observed by the security authorities in 2016 and 2017, but they found no terrorist preparations. Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said that the perpetrator “unexpectedly took action”. According to the public prosecutor, he described himself as a "soldier" of the terrorist organization " Islamic State " (IS) during the hostage-taking . The IS later claimed the act for itself.

did

Lakdim shot at the occupants of a car in Carcassonne on the morning of March 23, 2018. He killed the passenger with a shot in the head and injured the driver. A short time later, he shot a group of police officers from the Compagnies Républicaines de Sécurité , who had just returned from jogging, and injured one of them. Then he drove to nearby Trèbes , robbed a Super U supermarket , holed up and took hostages.

Lieutenant Colonel Arnaud Beltrame

According to eyewitnesses, he was armed with knives, a firearm and hand grenades. In the supermarket he shot the meat seller and another person. According to the French Interior Ministry, twelve people are said to have been injured. Most of the store's customers and employees managed to escape. Lakdim called for the release of the terrorist Salah Abdeslam who was involved in the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris .

The 44-year-old Lieutenant Colonel of the Gendarmerie Arnaud Beltrame offered himself as an exchange for the last remaining hostage. He left his phone with an established connection on a table in the supermarket; the security forces outside the supermarket could hear what was happening inside the building. The perpetrator shot at Beltrame around noon. As a result, GIGN specialists from the National Gendarmerie stormed the supermarket. In the subsequent exchange of fire, the hostage taker was shot. Arnaud Beltrame died of serious injuries the following morning.

When investigating the crime scene, investigators found three explosive devices.

Investigations

The anti-terrorist prosecutor in France had a close friend of the perpetrator interrogated and arrested a 17-year-old. The youth had contact with the assassin and he was being investigated for membership in a terrorist organization.
