The Yellow campion capsule tensioner ( Perizoma flavofasciata ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the tensioner (Geometridae). The species name is derived from the Latin words flavus and fascia with the meanings "yellow" and "bandage" and refers to the drawing on the upper wing of the butterfly.

The moths reach a wingspan of 19 to 32 millimeters. The sexes do not differ in color. The basic color of the upper side of the forewings is whitish and streaked with several yellowish to ocher-colored transverse bands, the middle of which shows two long prongs towards the edge. A slightly darkened fringe stands out from the whitish-colored upper side of the hind wing.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are short and stocky. They have a whitish to yellowish color and show broad reddish-brown side ridge lines and black stigmas . The head capsule is glossy black-brown, the neck plate and anal plate are dark brown.

Similar species

The rattling pot capsule tensioner ( Perizoma albulata ) differs by the pale gray-brown markings on the upper side of the forewing .

The distribution area of ​​the yellow light carnation capsule spanner extends through large parts of western and central Europe including the British Isles and further east to the Urals and the Altai Mountains . The species prefers to colonize meadow valleys, floodplains, riparian areas, bushy meadows and gardens. In the Alps it rises to 1,500 meters.

Way of life

The yellow light clove capsule wrench usually forms one generation a year, whose moths fly from mid-April to mid-July. In climatically favorable areas, specimens from a second generation were found in August or September. The moths are crepuscular and nocturnal and visit artificial light sources . The main food of the caterpillars is the fruits of the red ( Silene dioica ) or the white light carnation ( Silene latifolia ), occasionally also the bearded carnation ( Dianthus barbatus ). During their development, the caterpillars first live in the flowers and later in the seed pods. The species overwinters as a pupa .
