The yellow slim cichlid or striped tanganyika perch ( Julidochromis ornatus ) is a cichlid from Africa .

Occurrence and habitat

Julidochromis ornatus is endemic and inhabits the rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika . The water temperature is 26–28 ° C. In addition, the water is slightly basic ( pH 7.0–8.0).

features

The length of the fish is approx. 8 cm. Gender differences are not very pronounced. The female is slightly smaller than the male. In addition, a special submissive behavior (e.g. crouching) can be observed in the female , since the male is very aggressive.

Sexual Behavior and Brood

The female lays approx. 20–50 eggs in a cave, whereupon the young hatch after an incubation period of 48 hours . The fry spend a long time in the vicinity of the spawning area and are protected by their parents (until the next spawn). It can also hybrids between species Julidochromis ornatus and Julidochromis marlieri (julidochromis marlieri) arise, but they are infertile . The hybrids are reminiscent of Julidochromis transcriptus (black and white slim cichlid).

Keeping as ornamental and farmed fish

The yellow slim cichlid is kept as an ornamental fish . Care should be taken to ensure that there is enough space (approx. 50–100 l for a couple). In addition, the fish is aggressive towards others as well as its own species, so it should not be kept in community tanks.
