The yellow-headed cichlid ( Amatitlania nanoluteus ) is a small freshwater fish from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae) that occurs in northwestern Panama in the catchment area of the Rio Guarumo in the Bocas del Toro province .

features

The largest specimen measured to date had a total length of 8.4 cm and a standard length of 6.4 cm. The yellow-headed cichlid has a stocky, high-backed body that is strongly flattened on the sides. With the exception of the transparent pectoral fins, the animals are yellowish in color. As with the well-known and closely related zebra cichlid , dark, vertical bands run on the sides of the body, but they are much less developed than in the zebra cichlid. The forehead and back shimmer slightly green, the rear trunk slightly bluish. Females can be distinguished from males by a dark spot in the dorsal fin.

Systematics

The yellow-headed cichlid was first scientifically described in 1994 by the French ichthyologist Robert Allgayer and then assigned to the genus Archocentrus . Later assignments were made to Cichlasoma and Cryptoheros . Since a revision of the Central American cichlids published in 2016, the species belongs to Amatitlania .
