The yellow bridge fusilier ( Caesio teres , syn .: Caesio pulcherrimus Smith & Smith, 1963 ), also called yellow blue-backed fusilier  or yellow-tailed fusilier , is a  marine fish  from the  snapper family (Lutjanidae).

features

The fusilier becomes up to 40 cm long. Its body is spindle-shaped and its caudal fin is forked. The protruding mouth is small and terminal. Both jaws and the palate ( vomer and palatine ) are covered with small teeth. The bases of the dorsal and anal fin are scaled, with the dorsal fin also the lower two thirds of the hard-radiating part.

The upper two thirds of the bodies are blue with the exception of the yellow back above an oblique line from the base of the dorsal fin to the lower caudal peduncle. In the case of large specimens, especially those from the western Pacific, the yellow color zone does not extend so far forward. The belly is silvery white, the base of the pectoral fin is black above. The part of the dorsal fin located on the trunk is blue, the outer part yellow, the caudal fin is yellow, the anal fin and the paired fins are whitish.

distribution

The yellow bridge fusilier occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the coast of East Africa to the Line Islands in central Polynesia. It is absent in the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf .

Way of life

The yellow bridge fusilier lives in large shoals at depths of 5 to 35 meters near and in the wider vicinity of coral reefs and prefers coral-covered lagoons. It feeds on  zooplankton and forms swarms with other fusiliers, often with Caesio xanthonota . The fish spawn at dusk during the full moon, then rise in large groups to the surface of the sea to eject eggs and sperm. This can be repeated several times. The eggs are held in suspension by a droplet of oil, so they are pelagic, colorless and about 0.77 mm in diameter.
