Purse laundering (also Geldbeitlwäsch ) mainly means an event in the Swabian-Alemannic Carnival that takes place on Ash Wednesday .

It marks the end of the current season for most fools guilds . The purses are empty and the opportunity is taken to wash them and, according to an old belief, to put new money in the bags. The participants are mostly dressed in black and carry out this custom full of mourning with loud howling.
