Living history (Hillary Clinton)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lived History ( English: Living History ) is the title of the 2003 autobiography by Hillary Clinton .

Emergence

Shortly after being elected Senator from New York , Hillary Clinton decided to publish her autobiography and agreed a fee of $ 8 million with the renowned publisher Simon & Schuster , of which $ 3 million was an advance payment, which was a record-breaking non-fiction book at the time Sum represented. Critics argued that accepting such a sum was inconsistent with the ethical principles governing senators. However, the New York Senate Ethics Committee gave its approval in February 2001.

Clinton announced that three ghostwriters had worked on the book , some of whom have worked with her for a long time or write their speeches: Maryanne Vollers, Alison Muscatine and Ruby Shamir. However, there was no indication of the ghostwriters in the finished book itself, which is not uncommon for autobiographies by politicians.

Appear

The book was published on June 9, 2003 in the USA and at the same time in 15 other countries, including Germany, and set a new sales record for non-fiction books in the first week after it was published. The book's success surprised many who believed that Simon & Schuster had paid too high a price. Tucker Carlson , talk show host on CNN , said on his show: “If the book should sell more than a million copies, I'll eat my shoes and tie. I will do it."

After just a month, the one million mark was exceeded and Hillary Clinton appeared on the Carlson Show to give him a shoe-shaped chocolate cake. The fact that Hillary Clinton signed an estimated 20,000 copies within a short period of time also contributed to the book's rapid success. She also accepted that her aching wrist would then have to be treated with ice and that a wrist brace was needed for some time.

content

The book comprehensively describes her life from childhood to her education at Yale University , getting to know fellow student Bill Clinton to later marriage, the time as wife of the governor of Arkansas and the birth of her daughter Chelsea to the time as First Lady . Although very comprehensive and, from the point of view of its followers, interesting reading material is offered, deep personal insights in the sense of previously unknown information are rather rare. Exact details of the Lewinsky affair (original English title of the corresponding chapter: "an inappropriate intimacy" ) are hidden. Although her husband pretended for months that he was only friends with Monika Lewinsky and only told her the truth shortly after his testimony before the investigative committee, Hillary Clinton ultimately leaves no doubt that she stands by her husband Bill. She also reports that during the difficult time, of course, a marriage counselor was regularly consulted .

Her political message is important to her: As a senator from New York, she takes the same liberal standpoints as her husband once did as president and settles accounts with the conservatives who, just to prevent her husband's policies, have exaggerated the affairs up to and including impeachment proceedings against hers Man. In addition, numerous encounters and speeches from her time as First Lady are described or reproduced.

reception

As early as 2003, many saw the autobiography as a step into the future. Well, if she could get past the negatives of the past and her husband's affairs while sticking to him unequivocally, she would have the strength to run in the 2008 US presidential primaries , which then also happened.
