The Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium ( Indonesian Stadium Gelora Sriwijaya , also called Jakabaring Stadium ) is a multi-purpose stadium in Palembang , Indonesia . It has a capacity of 40,000 spectators and was built from 2001 to 2004 to host the Indonesian national games Pekan Olahraga Nasional XVI . It is the third largest stadium in Indonesia after the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta and the Palaran Stadium in Samarinda .
The stadium was originally named Jakabaring Stadium after its location in the suburb of Palembang of the same name . Later it was renamed Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium in honor of the 7th to 13th centuries existing kingdom of Srivijaya .
Currently the stadium is mainly used for soccer games; the Indonesian club Sriwijaya FC plays its home games here.
Events
The following major events have been or will be held in the Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium:
- From September 2 to 14, 2004, the opening, closing and football tournaments of the Indonesian National Games Pekan Olahraga Nasional XVI took place in the stadium.
- In 2005 the ASEAN U-20 soccer championship was held here.
- In July 2007, the stadium hosted two Asian Cup matches , the group match between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain in group D and the third place match between Japan and South Korea .
- The group game Malaysia - Laos at the ASEAN soccer championship 2010 ( AFF Suzuki Cup ) was played in the stadium.
- In November 2011 the 26th Southeast Asian Games will be played at the Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium .
