Systematics
Order : Beetle (Coleoptera)
Subordination : Polyphaga
Family : Black beetle (Tenebrionidae)
Subfamily : Woolly Beetle (Lagriinae)
Genre : Lagria
Type : Common wool beetle
Scientific name
Lagria hirta
( Linnaeus , 1758)

The common woolly beetle ( Lagria hirta , Syn .: Lagria pubescens ) is a beetle from the family of the black beetle (Tenebrionidae) within the subfamily of the woolly beetle (Lagriinae).

features

The beetle is 7 to 10 millimeters long. The head and pronotum are black or brown-black, the rather soft wings (Elytren) are yellow-brown or yellow. The antennae and legs are dark brown to black in color. The forehead of the males is narrower than that of the female. The pronotum is wider than it is long and at the base (this is the rear edge) narrower than the wing. It is loosely structured like a point. The cover wings, the epipleurs of which are formed along the entire length of the cover wing, which is turned under at the side and set off by an edge, are also dotted. The latter are narrower at the level of the fourth sternite than the rails ( tibia ) of the hind legs are wide. The species can be confused with Lagria atripes , whose epipleures at the level of the fourth sternite are as wide as the rails of the hind legs. In addition, the pronotum of Lagria atripes is a little wider.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in Europe and east to Siberia. It occurs north to the south of Norway, central Sweden and the north of Finland and can also be found locally on the British Isles. It colonizes forest edges, both of deciduous and coniferous forests, as well as meadows, streams, hedges, gardens, ruderal areas, semi-arid grassland and other habitats from flatlands to high mountains. The type is common.

Way of life

The larvae develop in the soil litter in rotting plant material. They overwinter and only pupate in spring. The adults appear in summer.
