history

The non-profit housing association Munich 1899 eV was founded in 1899 by Mayor Wilhelm Georg Borscht as an “Association for the Improvement of Housing Conditions in Munich eV” . The primary goal was to "contribute to improving the living conditions of the less well-off classes in Munich".

The board members from the early days, Karl Singer and Paul Busching , initiated the construction of most of the residential complexes, which were continuously renovated and renewed in the decades that followed. Today, the housing association has both an old but well-preserved and restored housing stock, as well as new apartments, such as the new building in the Nymphenburg residential complex, which was completed and occupied in early 2020.

The development of Bavarian housing construction was significantly shaped by the board members Karl Singer and Paul Busching. A magazine for housing was brought into being in the building of the housing association and when Paul Busching was involved in founding the association, he continued to run this magazine as the association magazine. Today it is the oldest German-language magazine on housing.

The establishment of other social institutions such as B. the single home in Munich and the construction and management of the "Alte Heide" were carried out by the board members. By the time the association was taken over by the National Socialists in 1933, nine residential complexes had already been built for the association. After the war, reconstruction began in 1948 and new buildings began in 1955. In 1964/65 the tenth residential complex was built in Laim . In 1961 the name of the association was also changed. The "Association for the Improvement of Housing in Munich eV" became the "Non-profit Housing Association Munich 1899 eV".
