Architecture and history

The double school building was built between 1887 and 1890 as the Neue Neustädter 1st People's Girls 'School and 1st People's Boys' School according to plans by the city building councilor Otto Peters and the city building inspector Emil Jaehn . It is symmetrically designed and oriented in a north-south direction. The layout of the building corresponds to four other Magdeburg school buildings that were built during this period. Only the facade design, consisting of red and yellow bricks, is carried out differently. The facade is structured horizontally using red bricks. The stairwells emerge as two narrow risalits . On an area of ​​740 m², 18 classrooms and other rooms were created on three floors.

First the southern part of the school was built in 1887. After completion, the northern part was built in 1888. The two elementary schools then moved in in 1890 and 1891. In 1891 the gymnasium was built into which the service apartments for two castellans were also integrated. The gym building is low. The facade is laid out in eight axes, with windows arranged in pairs. A two-story head building is in front of the gym.

The southern part of the building was badly damaged during World War II . A reconstruction did not take place until 1984/85. In the time of the GDR there was a high school named after Thomas Müntzer in the building . After the political turning point in 1989 , the school was converted into the Thomas Müntzer secondary school and later into a community school.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the school building and the school yard were renovated. The interior was rebuilt and the originally existing strict separation of the two halves of the school was lifted by installing connecting corridors.

The building is listed as a school in the local monument register under registration number 094 82872.
