Geminella is a freshwater genus from the green algae group of the Chlorophyceae . It includes about 11 species.

features

The representatives form unbranched threads from a row of cells, the threads easily disintegrate into individual cells. The thread diameter is 2 to 20 micrometers. The cells are embedded in a jelly that surrounds all cells but is often difficult to see. Often two cells in the thread are brought closer together in pairs.

The cells have a central nucleus and a band-shaped, wall-shaped chloroplast that contains a single pyrenoid and starch .

The asexual reproduction is done by cross-division of the cells and disintegration of the yarn by dissolution of jelly. The sexual reproduction of the genus is unknown.

Occurrence

The representatives of the genus occur in the plankton of lakes and small bodies of water. They are often overlooked.
