Eugene Oliver Edgar Stutenroth , also Gene Roth or Eugene Stutenroth (born January 8, 1903 in Redfield , South Dakota , † July 19, 1976 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Gene Roth was born on January 8, 1903, Eugene Oliver Edgar Stutenroth, the youngest of three sons in Redfield. His parents were the German Eugene Stutenroth and the Swede Anna Christina Olsen. Roth and his two brothers were raised by their mother. The father had left her when Eugene was two years old. Roth attended West High School in Minneapolis , which he graduated in 1920. His first roles as an actor were in silent films in the early 1920s. During this time Roth worked as a cinema manager or built and installed organs. In 1943, he went to Hollywood , California to pursue his acting career. He often played menacing bad guys, like in the slapstick comedy The Three Stooges, or working-class guys, die-hard law enforcement officers. He worked in both cinema and television productions for more than two decades. After leaving the film industry in the early 1970s, Roth worked as a drugstore employee.

Roth was married four times and the father of three children. Roth's life tragically ended in a traffic accident on July 19, 1976 at the age of 73 when he was crossing a street in Los Angeles. The person who caused the accident committed hit-and-run.
