Revenge of the black spider (original title: Earth vs. the Spider , also The Spider ) is an American horror film by director Bert I. Gordon from 1958 .

Jack Flynn drives home on a highway at night. He wants to give his daughter Carol a bracelet for her birthday. But there is a collision. The next morning, when Carol sees that her father is not home yet, she and her friend Mike go looking for him. They soon discover the wreckage and also find the bracelet. But there is no trace of Carol's father. They search the area and come across a cave. In the cave they find the web of a gigantic spider, from which the two are attacked immediately. However, you can escape from the cave.
Carol and Mike try to convince Sheriff Cagle of the giant spider. The teacher Mr. Kingman intervenes and the sheriff goes to the cave with Carol and Mike. In the cave they find Carol's father's dead body. An attack by the spider now also convinces the sheriff, who wants to attack the monster with huge amounts of DDT. In fact, the DDT paralyzes the spider that is now being brought into town. At school, Mr. Kingman wants to examine her.
A dance group is training for a performance at school. The giant spider wakes up, the children flee in panic, the caretaker is killed by the spider. Before the spider makes its way to its cave, it crosses the city and kills several residents in the process. When the spider threatens Mrs. Kingman and her baby, she is distracted by the following Mr. Kingman, who hits one of her legs with his car. Mr. Kingman lures the spider out of town.
The sheriff wants to fight the spider with dynamite, which is supposed to be buried in its cave by the explosion. But in the cave there are now Carol and Mike who are looking for the bracelet that Carol lost when she escaped from the cave. The spider chases the two of them up to a ledge. Kingman comes to the aid of the two. He tosses a couple of electrodes to Mike and turns them on. The spider receives an electric shock that sweeps it off the ledge. The monster falls into the abyss and is impaled by stalagmites on the ground.
Reviews
The lexicon of international films described the film as "an outrageous, involuntarily comical cheap horror film that works with the trivial effects of the good old fairground ghost train."
The "TimeOut Movieguide" was particularly amused by the dimensions of the spider, which on the one hand fit comfortably into the interior of a high school, for which on the other hand multi-storey buildings are no obstacles.

The world premiere took place in September 1958. The film was first shown in Germany on May 20, 1960.
The recordings in the caves were made in the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico .
The original title The Spider was after completion in Earth vs. the spider changed. When 20th Century Fox in the same year the film The Fly (original: The Fly ) brought out, which became a box office hit, the production company decided American International Pictures to on the promotional material for the film the original title The Spider to use.
The film is one of Bert I. Gordon’s productions that he not only directed and produced. He was also responsible for the special effects, together with his wife Flora, and provided the idea for the script.
A scene from the film is used in the film Lilo & Stitch .
