Gene Sperling

Gene B. Sperling (born December 24, 1958 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) is an American economist . He succeeds Lawrence Summers as head of the National Economic Council in the White House. Previously, Sperling served as an advisor to Minister Timothy F. Geithner . Sperling is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations .

Life

After attending Community High School in Ann Arbor, Sperling earned a BA in Political Science from the University of Minnesota . He then earned a JD at Yale Law School and graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania . In the 1990s, Sperling worked for the Governor of New York , Mario Cuomo .

During President Bill Clinton's first term , Sperling served as deputy head of the National Economic Council, then headed by Robert Rubin . When he was promoted to Secretary of the Treasury of the United States , Sperling took over the leadership of the Economic Council from 1996 to 2000.
