Gennadi Ivanovich Janajew ( Russian Геннадий Иванович Янаев , born  August 26, 1937 in Perewos ; †  September 24, 2010 in Moscow ) was a Soviet politician , Vice President of the USSR and a 1991 coup against Gorbachev .

Life

In 1959, Janayev graduated from the Gorky Institute for Agriculture with a specialization in agricultural mechanical engineering . From 1959 he worked as the head of a mechanized agricultural unit in the Gorky region. From 1963 to 1968 he worked in the Komsomol , the youth organization of the CPSU . From 1968 to 1980 he was full-time chairman of the USSR Committee for Youth Organizations. From 1986 to 1990 he was a secretary (until 1989), deputy chairman and then chairman of the all-union central council of trade unions.

In the course of perestroika, Mikhail Gorbachev promoted Janajev's rise to power. Gorbachev wrote in 1995: "That was my big mistake". From July 14, 1990 to August 24, 1991, Janayev was secretary of the Central Committee and at the same time a full member of the Politburo . From 1990 to August 1991 he was also Vice President of the Soviet Union and thus representative of Gorbachev in his state office.

Janayev gained notoriety as chairman of the reactionary putschist group State Committee for the State of Emergency and co-initiator of the attempted August coup against Gorbachev in August 1991. The coup plotters' attempt to persuade Gorbachev to resign failed. After three days, the coup was over, and Boris Yeltsin in particular stood out in its suppression . As a result of the conspiracy, Gorbachev's power waned, the CPSU was banned from the RSFSR , and in late 1991 the collapse of the Soviet Union was sealed. Janayev and his fellow coups were sentenced to prison terms. As early as 1993, he was released from prison for health reasons. In 1994 he was amnestied by the Duma .

Janayev was then a consultant in the Committee of Veterans and Invalids of the Public Service. He was the head of the IMF's aid to children with disabilities. Most recently, he was head of the Department of National History and International Relations at the Russian International Academy of Tourism .

Janayev died of lung cancer in a Moscow hospital in 2010 . He was buried in the Trojekurovo cemetery in Moscow.

He was married and had two daughters.
