Geoffrey Cornish

Geoffrey S. Cornish (born August 6, 1914 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ; † February 10, 2012 in Amherst , Massachusetts , USA ) was a Canadian golf architect who was best known for his standard works on golf architecture. His main job is to design over 200 golf courses in Canada, the United States and Europe. He specialized in building inexpensive public spaces that were suitable for a wide range of skill levels.

Life

Cornish studied Crop Science at the University of British Columbia . After he received his bachelor's degree there , he continued his studies at the University of Massachusetts , where he received his master's degree and later an honorary doctorate .

In 1935, Cornish began working in golf course design, working for Stanley Thompson . During the Second World War he served in the Canadian Army and was stationed in Europe from 1940 to 1945. After returning to Canada, he returned to work for Thompson. In 1952, Cornish went into business for himself in Amherst, Massachusetts. In 1967 he joined the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA). From 1975 to 1976 he served as President of the ASGCA and was co-chair of the ASGCA History Committee alongside Michael Hurdzan .

Cornish published a number of books during his career. The Golf Course and The Architects of Golf are considered standard works of golf course design. In 1996 he was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame .
