Geoffrey Grimmett
Geoffrey Richard Grimmett (born December 20, 1950 in Birmingham ) is a British mathematician who deals with probability theory and disordered systems in statistical mechanics , for example with percolation . He is the Professor of Mathematical Statistics at the Cambridge University Statistics Laboratory and Masters Degree from Downing College, Cambridge University.
Grimmett went to school in Birmingham and studied at Oxford University , where he graduated in 1971 and received his doctorate in 1974 with John Hammersley (and Dominic Welsh ) ( Random Fields and Random Graphs ). He then was an IBM Research Fellow at New College, Oxford from 1974 to 1976. From 1976 he was at the University of Bristol and from 1992 Professor of Mathematical Statistics at the University of Cambridge , where he is a Fellow of Churchill College . From 1994 to 2000 he was director of the Statistical Laboratory and from 2002 to 2007 head of the Faculty of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics.
In 1989 he received the Rollo Davidson Prize . He is a trustee of the Rollo Davidson Foundation. In 2014 he was elected to the Royal Society . In 2014 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Seoul (Criticality, universality, and isoradiality).
From 2000 to 2005 he was editor of Probability Theory and Related Fields and from 2009 of Probability Surveys.
At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal he was a member of the British team in foil - fencing , which finished sixth.
