The Georg-Büchner-Platz (also Georg-Büchner-Anlage) is a public square in Darmstadt . It was named after the writer Georg Büchner .

location

Georg-Büchner-Platz is located in front of the State Theater , between Sandstrasse and Hügelstrasse. On the east side, the Wilhelminenplatz borders with the St. Ludwig Church. The Moller House is on the south side .

history

A garden was first laid out on the square in 1804 at the request of Hereditary Grand Duke Ludwig ( Ludwig II ), which at that time still occupied the entire area between Marienplatz and Wilhelminenplatz. The Botanical Garden was located here from 1849 to 1863 . In the years 1864/65 the New Palais (also Prinz-Ludwig-Palais) was built in the neo-renaissance style . After the destruction of the palace in the Second World War, the garden overran and has meanwhile been divided into several allotment garden parcels, in which the population planted fruit and vegetables. In 1954 work began to clear the site. A garden was created that would combine the English and French styles, but also retain the character of the botanical garden. With the construction of the State Theater and its underground car park , the green area was redesigned in 1972 with planters, borders, lawns, underground car park emergency exits and the installation of the "Grande Disco", an open-air sculpture made of chased bronze by Arnaldo Pomodoro from 1974. In 1998 the city decided to renovate the facility. In the course of the renovation of the State Theater in 2009/10, the architect Arno Lederer fundamentally redesigned Georg-Büchner-Platz. The square was officially opened on August 27, 2010.

Design

The system is divided into three areas. The large, middle zone serves the theater as a forecourt with wide steps made of concrete and lawn strips. In the direction of Wilhelminenplatz, the terraces are followed by an open area with a water surface and the fountains installed on it . The monument to Georg Büchner, the Grande Disco by the Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro, is also located on the water surface. In the slightly elevated areas in the north and south there are a total of 9 mushrooms made of white concrete, which serve as access to the underground car park, rows of trees, benches and play equipment.

Events

Open-air concerts by the Darmstadt State Orchestra take place annually to mark the opening of the State Theater's season and to celebrate the Heinerfest . The BIS (Bilalzentrum, Imanzentrum and Islamic Student Association) has been organizing the joint breaking of the fast on Georg-Büchner-Platz since 2015 . On June 15, 2012, the Le Diner en Blanc took place on Georg Büchner Platz with around 1500–2000 participants.
