Arno Lederer (born October 3, 1947 in Stuttgart ) is a German architect , office partner at Lederer + Ragnarsdóttir + Oei and professor of architecture.

Life

Arno Lederer studied architecture at the University of Stuttgart and at the Technical University of Vienna from 1970 to 1976 . In 1976 he completed his studies with a diploma and in 1977 worked in the Ernst Gisel office in Zurich . In 1978 he started working for the architectural office BHO (Berger Hauser Oed) in Tübingen before going into business for himself in 1979. Arno Lederer works in Stuttgart, since 1985 in shared office with Jórunn Ragnarsdóttir (* 1957 in Akureyri , Iceland), from 1992 with Marc Oei (* 1962 in Stuttgart).

From 1985 to 1990 he was professor of construction and design at the Technical College in Stuttgart, and in 1990 he took over the chair for building construction and design I at the University of Karlsruhe . From 1997 to 2005 Arno Lederer was head of the chair for building theory at the architecture faculty there.

From 2005 to 2014 Arno Lederer headed the Institute for Public Buildings and Design at the University of Stuttgart . 2000–2005 he was a member of the advisory board of the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt am Main, 2002–2006 scientific advisory board of the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning in Berlin.

From 2003 to 2012 Arno Lederer was a member of the University Council of the Stuttgart University of Technology . From 2007 to 2012 Lederer was a member of the advisory board of the Federal Foundation for Building Culture in Potsdam ; since 2009 he has been a member of the design advisory board for the Dom-Römer area of the city of Frankfurt am Main . From 2014 to 2018 Arno Lederer was part of the building committee of the city of Zurich. He has been a member of the Bavarian State Architecture Committee since 2014.

The Lederer, who was influenced by the early postmodern era and the architecture of the 1970s, represents a construction method based on anthropological constants. He rejects the modern construction technology in the sense of a filigree steel-glass architecture in favor of the massively enclosed space.

The right angle is rounded off again and again at selected points - such as stairwells or window openings - in order to produce a form of architecture that is rather unusual for Germany's contemporary architecture. Lederer sees architecture as building art that does not have to claim to be perfect. In his opinion, structural damage can be discovered even in important buildings in recent architectural history. He is also critical of the use of digital technology in connection with the creation of a design. The computer plan is often given priority in watercolors or pencil plans.

While the majority of the architectural world is turning to a more technoid-visionary stance, Arno Lederer adopts a traditional, anthroposophical outsider stance . At a time when energy consumption and sustainability are becoming more and more important, in the opinion of many architects there is no longer any space for traditional building. In this context, Lederer himself refers to the fact that technology has eliminated the essential elements of the building. What remains is a standardized architecture that is as utilisable as possible, whereby what is actually beautiful - including values ​​in human consciousness - is lost.

Teaching

Arno Lederer's attitude was also carried over to teaching. He mainly gave architecture students haptic and drawing experiences in connection with architectural design. The creative process of design is the most important thing here, while building physics or constructive questions tend to be pushed into the background. At the same time, Arno Lederer is close to building construction issues: he has taught this subject at both the Stuttgart University of Technology and the University of Karlsruhe. Trivia

Arno Lederer left the University of Karlsruhe in 2005 because he was offered a position at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Stuttgart. He was dissatisfied with the general teaching attitude at the TH Karlsruhe in the department of architecture. In the summer of 2020, Lederer stood together Ragnarsdottir and Oei against the “Tutti” kiosk, which was to be temporarily set up under the colonnades of the Darmstadt State Theater. 2008: Competition Humboldt Forum (City Palace) in Berlin

In 2008 Arno Lederer was a member of the jury for the competition to rebuild the Berlin City Palace (Humboldt Forum). The winner of this international competition was the Italian architect Franco Stella . The Arno Lederer at the time published contribution Enter Freedom of Thought on 23 December 2008 describes the excellent with a special prize design of the architecture firm Kuehn Malvezzi (Berlin), who proposed a "completed shell" of exposed brick instead of a stringent reconstruction of the castle. This façade would then have been successively decorated with stone mason elements.

1997: Competition Stuttgart 21

In 1997 Arno Lederer acted as a “specialist judge” in the jury for the architectural design of the “Stuttgart 21” project. In addition to high-ranking architects, Deutsche Bahn AG, the federal government, the state of Baden-Württemberg and the state capital Stuttgart were represented in this jury for the reorganization of Stuttgart's main train station. In 1997, Lederer, as one of the "specialist judges", approved the partial demolition of the Stuttgart main station designed by Paul Bonatz. The vote of the jury on November 4, 1997 was unanimous.

The award-winning design is based on the demolition of the two side wings of the Bonatz building. On August 20, 1987, the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office classified the ensemble of Stuttgart Central Station as a “cultural monument of particular importance”.

Arno Lederer was one of the signatories of an international appeal formulated in April 2008 by prominent monument conservationists, art historians and architects "to preserve Stuttgart's main train station". The appeal was directed against the planned demolition of the two side wings of the building, as conceived in the award-winning design by the Düsseldorf architects Ingenhoven.
