The Georg-Wilhelm-Steller-Gymnasium is a state high school in Bad Windsheim in Central Franconia .

history

The establishment of the institution, then known as schola latina ( Latin school ), dates back to around 1400. This makes the school the oldest grammar school of its kind in Bavaria . In 1401 a donation to the boarding school students in Bad Windsheim is reported and from 1412 the obituary notice of the first director of the Latin school, Uldaricus Engerer, has been preserved. However, there are not many documents from the early days that describe the processes and organization of the school.

In 1595, the school received its first "School Rules on School Obedience". 16 years later, the school is called the Gymnasium . In 1667 a second school regulation followed, which stipulated that only Latin should be spoken in class. During this time Franz Daniel Pastorius also attended the school, the founder of Germantown in the later US state of Pennsylvania . Another famous personality who attended grammar school from 1714 to 1729 was the researcher, co-discoverer and later namesake of Alaska, Georg Wilhelm Steller .

In 1757, under the modern director Georg Wilhelm Dietz, French was first offered as a foreign language alongside Latin and Greek . In 1831 the Bavarian school regulations were introduced at the grammar school, since Bad Windsheim has belonged to Bavaria since 1810. In 1919, English was introduced as the first foreign language and French and Latin were taught as a second foreign language.

In 1967 the new building of the school, which since 1965 has been officially called Georg-Wilhelm-Steller-Gymnasium , was completed. In 1973 the number of students reached the 600 mark. Since then, two IT rooms have been set up and two extensions have been made to the school building, which houses five new classrooms , a cafeteria , a biology room , a language laboratory (now a computer room ) and a media room. In 2006 a third expansion of the school building with a dining room was made. This became necessary due to the introduction of the eight-year grammar school (shortened course →  G8 ) in Bavaria.

The current headmaster is Uwe Nickel.
