Life

Georg Andreas Steltzner was born in Clausthal as the son of the later Obersteigers Johann Mathias Steltzner. He did not enjoy any higher education and joined the mining administration in 1737 at the age of twelve as a poch boy, for which he later worked in various mines, most recently as a handyman in the House of Israel mine on the Burgstätter gangway in Clausthal. In 1751 he was appointed under climber. In 1763 he stayed temporarily in Freiberg for further training purposes . In 1764 he became senior jury member and in 1765 junior miner. By recruitment dated April 15, 1765, he was given the character and rank of chief miner . In 1766 he became vice chief miner, in 1771 the real chief miner at the unilateral Harz mines ( Zellerfeld mining office ) and thus the highest technical officer in the Upper Harz mining administration.

In 1773 Steltzner invented the pointer mechanism (depth pointer) to control the shaft conveyance, which was first used at the Caroliner Treiberei. He made particular contributions to the construction of the Tiefen Georg tunnel between Clausthal and the mining town of Grund , which he managed from 1777 until his retirement in 1797. In 1799 he experienced the last breakthrough in the tunnel. Steltzner died in 1802 and was buried in the Clausthal cemetery.

Until 1794 he created extensive documentation on the construction techniques in the Upper Harz water shelf .
