Georg Bernhard Leopold Zeller

Georg Bernhard Leopold Zeller (born December 26, 1728 in Dessau , † April 18, 1803 in Neustrelitz ) was a German violinist, conductor and composer.

Life

Little is known about Georg Zeller's origins. He received his musical training in Berlin and was in the service of Margrave Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg-Schwedt . From 1754 he was a violinist in the chapel of Prince Heinrich of Prussia in Rheinsberg Castle .

In 1762 he came to the ducal court of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in Neustrelitz, where he worked as first violinist and court conductor until the end of his life.

He acquired works by Georg Friedrich Händel , Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and several new instruments for the court concerts . In 1790 he performed Mozart's Don Giovanni .

Works

Zeller composed numerous works for courtly occasions. He wrote twelve symphonies, violin concertos, sonatas and church music. There are also three mourning cantatas for the funeral of the Dowager Duchess Dorothea Sophie in 1765 and cantatas for the birthday of Duke Adolf Friedrich IV of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

On church occasions he wrote compositions for the inauguration of the new organ in the Jerusalem Church in Berlin, for the inauguration of the church in Stargard in 1770 and in 1778 for the inauguration of the city ​​church in Neustrelitz.
