Georg Birk (around 1900)

Georg Birk (born October 11, 1839 in Hirschdorf / St. Lorenz parish , today Kempten (Allgäu) , † September 23, 1924 in Munich ) was a social democratic politician.

Birk was a journeyman butcher by profession. There are different reports about his early years. After Wilhelm Heinz Schröder , he came to Munich in 1865; other authors assume 1858. It is clear that Birk spent several years in Russia. Birk set up shop as an innkeeper in Munich. His inn was a center of social democracy in Munich , especially at the time of the Socialist Law . In 1901 Birk became the owner of a printing works and sponsor of the Munich party publishing house. From 1908 to 1919 Birk was a full-time magistrate of the city of Munich.

In 1893, Birk became the first social democrat to become a member of the municipal council in Munich. He was a member of the committee until 1905. He was also a member of the Second Chamber of the Bavarian State Parliament between 1899 and 1907 and a member of the German Reichstag from 1890 to 1898 as a member of the Upper Bavaria constituency (Munich I) . In 1903 he was re-elected to the Reichstag.
