Georg Brandt (General)
Georg Brandt (born August 24, 1876 in Woltersdorf , † April 21, 1945 in Berlin ) was a German cavalry general .
Life
He was the son of the Woltersdorf manor owner Julius Brandt and descendant of farmers from the vicinity of Magdeburg . After attending high school in Magdeburg, he began his military career in a dragoon regiment in September 1894. In 1896 he was promoted to lieutenant. In 1904 Georg Brandt was part of the German occupation brigade in China . As lieutenant general he took his leave in January 1931. At the beginning of the Second World War , Brandt was reactivated and at the end of August 1939 was appointed commander of Border Guard Section Command 3 ( Upper Silesia ), with which he was deployed in the Polish campaign . In October 1939 he was transferred to the Western Front as commander of the Higher Command XXXIII and took part in the Western campaign as part of the 7th Army . Under his command, the French city of Mulhouse was occupied on June 20, 1940 . Then, together with the staff of the Higher Command XXXVI, he was transferred to Norway, where he was promoted to General of the Cavalry in December 1940. In 1942, shortly after his 66th birthday, he left the service for good. Shortly before the end of World War II, he committed suicide in the city during the Battle of Berlin .
