biography

After attending grammar school in Naumburg, he studied natural sciences in Jena , where he was a student and assistant to Ernst Haeckel . In 1870 he set up a large arboretum in Zöschen , in which over 6000 different types of wood were cultivated. In addition to what he acquired from plant collectors, Dieck himself went on expeditions to the Rocky Mountains (1888), to the Caucasus (1891) and Spain (1892), where he collected beetles, plants and mosses , as well as new taxa such as Orthotrichum cupulatum var. baldaccii discovered. Further trips took him to France, Italy and Sicily, Morocco, the Balkans and Turkey. Several plant taxa are named after Dieck, including Brachythecium dieckii and the maple hybrid Acer × dieckii .

In 1900 Dieck's wild rose collection with 450 varieties of rose was exhibited at the World Exhibition in Paris . The Europa-Rosarium in Sangerhausen acquired some of them .
